Actualités du 2ème semestre 2021
1st Japan-France Virtual Workshop on Thermoelectrics
Le premier Workshop virtuel de thermoélectricité Franco-Japonais s’est déroulé du 27 au 30 septembre 2021. Ce workshop, qui s’inscrivait dans le cadre d’un projet International Emerging Action coordonné par Emmanuel Guilmeau (CRISMAT) et Koichiro Suekuni (Univ. Kyushu) a rassemblé environ 160 participants sur 8 demi-journées, et a permis d’échanger sur les derniers résultats obtenus dans nos deux communautés, et d’apprécier les communications invités de 8 jeunes chercheurs et chercheuses.
Journée virtuelle de Thermoélectricité 2021
Cette année encore, les Journées Nationales de Thermoélectricité n’ont pas pu se tenir en présentiel du fait de la situation sanitaire. Comme en 2021, une Journée Virtuelle de Thermoélectricité a été organisée par les collègues de l’Institut Jean Lamour, le 9 décembre 2021. Cette journée a réuni 65 participants, qui ont pu assister à 4 sessions scientifiques rassemblant 14 communications orales. Malheureusement, le prix de thèse Bernard Coqblin n’a pas pu être remis cette année du fait d’un nombre insuffisant de candidatures de jeunes docteurs.
Annonces 2022
Prix de thèse Coqblin 2022
Le GIS TE lance chaque année un nouvel appel à candidature au prix Bernard Coqblin pour récompenser la meilleure thèse sur la thématique thermoélectrique. Le prix Coqblin s’élève à 500 € et il est sponsorisé par la société Française HotBlock OnBoard. Pour candidater cette année, la thèse doit avoir été soutenue entre le 1/09/2020 et le 01/05/2022 et le dossier doit être composé d’un CV étendu (CV + liste de publications + résumé des travaux de thèse) et du rapport de soutenance de thèse. L’examen des dossiers sera effectué par un comité de spécialistes extérieurs au GIS TE. La remise du prix de thèse 2022 et la présentation des travaux du (de la) lauréat(e) se feront au cours des Journées Nationales de Thermoélectricités en Juillet (voir ci-après). Les dossiers sont à adresser à Christophe Candolfi (christophe candolfi (at) mines-nancy.univ-lorraine.fr) avant le 1/06/2022.

Journées nationales de ThermoElectricité, JnTE 2022, Rennes
Si la situation sanitaire le permet, les Journées Nationales de Thermoélectricité seront organisées en présentiel à Rennes en Juillet (date en cours de finalisation) par Pierric Lemoine, Mathieu Pasturel et Régis Gauthier, de l’Institut des Sciences Chimiques de Rennes. Elles devraient s’étaler sur 3 jours, avec 2 demi-journées dédiées à des sessions de formation et 2 demi-journées à des présentations scientifiques.
Nous vous tiendrons informés dès que possible.
Conférence Matériaux 2022
La conférence « Matériaux 2022 » se déroulera à Lille du 24-28 octobre 2022. Un colloque « Matériaux et Énergies » sera organisé dans cette conférence, avec notamment pour mot-clef la thermoélectricité (lien). L’appel à contribution est ouvert jusqu’à mi avril 2022 (formulaire de soumission).
Thermoelectric materials for sustainable development (MRS-J / MRS-Mexico Bilateral Symposium)
Dans le cadre de la conférence IUMRS-ICAM 2022 qui se déroulera à Cancun du 14 au 19 août 2022 en mode hybride aura lieu un symposium « Thermoelectric materials for sustainable development ». L’appel à contribution est ouvert jusqu’au 31 mars 2022 (pour plus d’informations).
Organisation du GIS
Après 4 années de fonctionnement, les instances de coordination du GIS Thermoélectricité sont en cours de renouvellement.
Les instances du GIS sont constituées d’un Comité Directeur, où siègent les représentant des parties signataires de la convention de création du groupement, d’un conseil scientifique, et d’un bureau de direction. Le mandat de ces deux derniers, d’une durée de 4 ans, arrivait à échéance en ce début d’année 2022.
– Renouvellement du bureau de direction:
Depuis 4 ans, la direction du GIS était assurée par Bertrand Lenoir (IJL), assisté de David Bérardan (ICMMO) et Stéphane Pailhès (ILM). La nouveau bureau qui lui succédera pour les 4 prochaines années sera dirigé par Christophe Candolfi (IJL), assisté de Céline Barreteau (ICMPE) et David Bérardan (ICMMO)

Résumés de publications récentes en thermoélectricité
Thème : Matériaux
Il faut sauver le soldat SnSe

Depuis l’annonce en 2014 de valeurs de ZT records à haute température (jusqu’à 2,6 à 923 K) dans des monocristaux [1], le composé SnSe a fait l’objet de très nombreuses études. Rapidement après cette annonce, les premières études sur des échantillons polycristallins ont cependant révélé que les données de conductivité thermique de réseau mesurées dans ces monocristaux étaient non seulement très inférieures à celles mentionnées dans la littérature des années 60-70 mais également, de manière plus surprenante, inférieures à celles mesurées dans les échantillons polycristallins, malgré une diffusion accrue des phonons aux joints de grains attendue pour ces derniers. Les doutes sur la véracité des données publiées en 2014 furent renforcés par des nouvelles études menées sur des monocristaux de SnSe montrant que la conductivité thermique de réseau avait été initialement largement sous-estimée. La controverse suscitée par ces études contradictoires a alors conduit à rechercher de possibles explications pour expliquer ces différences et « sauver » les valeurs records de ZT.
Dans un article publié en Août 2021 dans Nature Materials, Zhou et coll. [2] mentionnent avoir découvert le coupable : la présence sous forme de traces d’oxyde d’étain à la surface des grains influence les mesures des propriétés électriques et thermiques réalisées sur des échantillons polycristallins. Les auteurs indiquent que les propriétés intrinsèques de SnSe sont révélées en prévenant la présence de ces oxydes dans les échantillons polycristallins avec, notamment, une valeur de conductivité thermique de réseau de 0.07 W m-1 K-1 à 783 K. Cette valeur extrêmement faible, à peine trois fois supérieure à celle de l’air (0.025 W m-1 K-1 à température ambiante), conduit alors à une valeur record de ZT de 3,1 à 783 K. Pour autant, la valeur de conductivité thermique de réseau mentionnée dans cet article, finalement inférieure à celle des monocristaux de l’étude de 2014, mettrait-elle définitivement fin à la controverse ? Des études supplémentaires par d’autres groupes de recherche seront nécessaires pour apporter une réponse étayée à cette question. On peut néanmoins se demander pourquoi la présence d’oxyde d’étain sous forme de traces dans de nombreux autres composés comportant de l’étain, tels que SnTe par exemple, ne conduit pas à une dégradation aussi spectaculaire de leurs propriétés électriques et thermiques. Le chemin reste encore long pour sauver le soldat SnSe, si tant est qu’il puisse l’être.
